About Phil
Phil's early education included an emphasis on mechanical and architectural drafting and art classes in high school, and 480 hours of blue print reading and sketching in college. His most valuable training, however, was serving as an apprentice to James T. (Jim) Britt in the 1970s in New York, where he lived at the time. Jim was taught his trade by an old school cabinet maker. Phil returned to college after the Vietnam War and went to work for Jim part-time. He had brought his grandmother's painted rocking chair, to have the paint removed, bought some varnish, got a few pointers on spraying and rubbing out the finish. When he returned, to get Jim's opinion, Phil can still see Jim puffing on his pipe, walking around the chair... he just said "it ain't right, do it again." That is how the part-time job began. After Phil graduated from college, Jim offered him a full-time job, which lasted for 5 years. During that time, Phil completed his 3-year apprenticeship and in 1977, became a New York Certified Journeyman Furniture Finisher. Click here to see a list of the extensive requirements that Phil completed to become a Certified Journeyman Furniture Finisher. They include 500-1000 hours in each of the following areas: acquiring general knowledge, preparation of a job for refinishing, use of remover solutions, sanding process, application of finish, hand polishing, blending, matching and finishing, estimating jobs, burning in, spraying, and related instruction. |
